Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance

Image
Grit is the enthusiasm and commitment it takes to remain with your future hopes and dreams. Grit is also perseverance and willpower, to continue even if you've experienced tough situations. Having this quality is something that is acquired over time; it's not easy. Being gritty involves executing your plans and goals despite the opposition of the outside world. In her Ted Talk, Angela Duckworth discusses grit and how it can impact your success and personal development. She says that regardless of IQ, students with more grit graduate from school college and are typically very successful. The argument she makes is crucial because grit and discipline go hand in hand. To achieve all of their life goals, Angela educates people that they should adopt the "growth mindset" attitude. This means that you must thrive on challenge, and can't allow yourself to see failure as a way to describe yourself; but as a jump-point for growth and developing your abilities. Achievin...

The Danger of a Single Story

The concepts of stories and storytelling go way back. In Chimamanda Adichies's Ted Talk, she discusses how influential a single story can be. People are impressionable and vulnerable in the face of a story, particularly as children. So, how is a single story generated? Simple. You repeatedly show people or something as one thing, and one thing ONLY, and that's what they become. Once Chimamanda saw Fede and his families' unfortunate lifestyle, it was difficult for her to see Fede's family as anything else other than poor, despite their unexpected talents. The stereotype Fede and his family were labeled with was created by the single story that Fede was poor. The issue with stere...

The Capability of Vulnerability

Image
One might ask themselves, what is vulnerability? Vulnerability is having the ability to open up and speak to others, with the acknowledgment that you might be criticized. Since vulnerability is difficult for many, it becomes a weakness that limits their capability of communicating with others, due to their instincts of fear.  In Brene Brown’s TedTalk, the researcher discusses her journey of investigating and studying courage, shame, and most importantly vulnerability. After diving deep into her research of vulnerability, she separated her data into two separate groups: one group of people who felt that they are worthy of love, and another group of people who struggle to believe so. Brown found the feeling of being loved is established from having courage not feeling any shame, while not feeling that sense of belonging correlates to feeling shame. To solve this issue of vulnerability, Brown suggests to accept it, and try to work on yourself to be able to break down the wall of vulne...
